Comics As Historical Fiction
All we want is a good story. Whether, that story is true or not is often less interesting. I think back on the film version of Fargo as a barometer for how an audience will react assuming something is true. In the case of From Hell, we mostly understand the panels are constructed at the delight of the author, but there is that part of our brains that is triggering the phrase, "yeah, but some of this is true at leas, right?" This is an effective tool, and this tool is manipulated ever so bluntly by the unflinching vision of Alan Moore.
